DIY Fabric Tape

Monday, July 26th, 2010 | By Melissa Vest | 3 Comments »

This morning I ran across a wonderful blog, Going Home to Roost.  It covers everything from organic gardening to DIY Projects, all with style and flair.  I found this wonderful DIY project for fabric tape, and I just had to share it with you.  If you would like instructions on how to make it, check out annkata’s blog post here.  All it takes to make it is some glue, fabric scraps and packing tape.  I always love a brilliant idea that’s simple to do, but also delivers maximum style!  This tape is perfect for wrapping your gifts, dressing up gift tags and much more.  Enjoy!

The BEST Banana Crumb Muffins

Sunday, July 25th, 2010 | By Melissa Vest | 2 Comments »

Ok, so maybe the title is a bit boisterous, but I think these muffins can stand up to the challenge.  They are the best I’ve ever had, so I wanted to share the recipe with you all.  The recipe is from The Blacksmith Inn in Door County, Wisconsin, where we stayed on vacation.  The little bed and breakfast sits right on Lake Michigan, and we even had a hammock on our deck.  Every morning the Inn keepers served a simple breakfast, usually some cheese, granola and a fabulous muffin.  When we got home from our vacation I looked up the Inn’s website to see if they had a recipe book I could order.  Low and behold, they solved all of my problems for me.  Their recipes are online for FREE!!!  (You can click here to download a .pdf with great recipes from the Blacksmith Inn.)

Every time I make these muffins I marvel at how easy it is.  There aren’t any big name ingredients (i.e.: expensive),which keeps costs low.  I am so happy to keep this recipe as a staple in …

Unexpected Details

I ran across this photo tonight while I was browsing the internet.  It’s such a great idea, I just had to share it with everyone!  These vintage knobs stand in for wall hooks, creating a unique space to organize everyday items.  You can search for old knobs in flea markets and antique stores, saving yourself money while creating a useful solution for your home.  I plan on doing this by our front door very soon!

On another note, today we drove out to War Eagle Mill.  The mill is still functioning and they produce everything from cornmeal to pancake mix with water power.  I took pictures while we were there and will post them soon.  We also went to Hobbs State Park…all on a quest to find fun things to do this weekend that didn’t cost too much.  We had a wonderful time, and it would have all been free except for the whole wheat flour and cornmeal that I couldn’t resist.  Tonight I baked some banana muffins with my newly acquired flour, and will have to share the recipe soon. …

Katharine McPhee’s Grey Dress for Less

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 | By Melissa Vest | 1 Comment »

The American Idol runner-up from season five, Katharine McPhee, looks like a million bucks in this casual-cool grey dress.  I love how she paired it with the oversized coral clutch and simple hair.  Here’s how to get the look on a Frugal Girl’s budget:

1-  Metamorphosis Dress from Mod Cloth for $54.99

2-  Jersey and Woven Wrap Dress from ASOS for $101.07

(A little closer match to Katharine’s dress, but also a little more expensive…)

3-  Pettry Clutch from ALDO Shoes for $35 (Peach)

4-  Mirror Mix Bangle Set from Wet Seal for $8
